BlackBerry sangat fenomenal, nampaknya kalimat itu cocok menggambarkan kondisi pasar handphone di Indonesia. Seperti kita tau bahwa, 2-4 tahun belakangan ini demam BlackBerry menggelegar Indonesia, terutama di kota-kota besar. Padahal layanan BlackBerry di Indonesia sendiri itu sudah ada sejak tahun 2005 tersedia di sini. Saat itu hanya Indosat sebagai operator tunggal yang menawarkan layanan Blackberry Internet Service (BIS).

Dulu, pada saat pasar indonesia masih hot mengenai handphone keluaran siemens, saya sempat bingung melihat spek. dari Siemens SK65 (2005) karena memiliki fasilitas Push-Email based on BlackBerry Built-In technology from RIM. Dan menurut saya, demamnya BB juga sedikit banyak disebabkan karena menjamurnya jejaring sosial seperti facebook atau twitter. Dengan koneksi internet yang siaga 24 jam, pasti update status dan berkomunikasi via internet atau instant messenger BBM jadi jauh lebih mudah. Apalagi dengan adanya pandangan masyarakat yang memandang prestis kalau bisa update status dari gadget tertentu. Karena ada juga beberapa dari teman/kenalan saya yang memang sepertinya terobsesi kalau bisa menampilkan update statusnya, apalagi bisa langsung dari aplikasi instant messaging tertentu.

Nah, orang-orang seperti ini yang kadang membuat saya berpikir, apakah mereka memang perlu fasilitas -push e-mail- yang merupakan faktor keunggulan dari BB? Karena dari puluhan kerabat yang saya (benar-benar) kenal yang menggunakan BB, mungkin tidak sampai sepertiganya yang memang menggunakan BB karena tuntutan kebutuhan. Sejauh ini orang-orang yang saya anggap menggunakan fasilitas BB secara maksimal adalah : orang-orang yang kerjanya mobile tapi mengharuskan cek email setiap saat, orang yang trading saham/valas secara online (dan mobile tentunya).

Sementara sampai saat ini, kebanyakan memang bukan karena kebutuhan, tapi ya karena gaya hidup. Rajin banget dan secara teratur mengupdate status dari akun jejaring sosialnya. Bahkan sepertinya mereka memiliki komunitas tersendiri. Mungkin sudah puluhan kali saya ditanya PIN BBM (BlackBerry Messenger).
